Emotional Dysregulation

Some people feel emotions very intensely, or find that their feelings shift quickly and take a long time to settle. This can be exhausting and can affect relationships, work and how people feel about themselves.

What it can feel like

It might feel like going from calm to overwhelmed very quickly, or reacting in ways you later regret. Some people describe feeling everything at full volume, while others swing between intense emotion and feeling numb.

People sometimes cope in ways that bring short-term relief but cause difficulties later. These ways of coping usually make sense in context, and therapy can help find alternatives.

How therapy may help

Therapy can help you understand your emotions, what triggers them and how to respond in ways that feel more manageable. Approaches such as DBT focus on practical skills for tolerating distress and regulating emotion, while MBT and CFT can help with the relational and self-critical patterns that often go alongside.

How we work with this

Our Clinical Psychologists will work with you to understand your experience and build skills at a pace that suits you. We offer individual therapy, drawing on DBT-informed approaches rather than a full DBT programme.
